What was the Ancient Agora of Athens?

'Agora' is a general term used to describe a central, public open space in a Greek city. The Agora of Athens dates back to the 6th century BC, and continued to be the main public space in the city until Roman times. It is located at the food of the Acropolis' northwestern slope.

Among its ruins, several key structures stand out:

  • Temple of Hephaestus (Hephaisteion): One of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world, later used as a Christian church dedicated to Saint George.

  • Stoa of Attalos: A restored building that likely served as a marketplace. Today, it’s an impressive museum housing numerous artifacts recovered from excavations, such as ceramic tools, sculptures, and coins.

  • Bouleuterion: Where the councilors met to prepare legislation for the ekklesia (the main assembly of Athenian democracy).

  • Tower of the Winds: Considered a precursor to modern weather stations.
